The flooded Ganjam district in India, affected by cyclone Phailin will await Diwali in darkness as power supply has not been restored to many households.
Many households have been without power since the 11th October and the Southern Electricity Supply Company (Southco) has restored power supply to only 40% of households despite the State Government imposed deadline ending on the 31st October.
“It will take another 15 days to sort out the problem and we are trying to restore power supply to all the block headquarters, NACs and urban centres in next couple of days,” claimed an anonymous senior Southco officer.
Despite the senior officer’s claims, the sources believe that the restoration of power supply will take at least another month due to a large number of power and distribution transformers being damaged and in need of replacement.
The latest progress report of the district stated that only 66 out of 114 damaged power transformers and 1,939 out of 8,094 distribution power transformers have been restored by Thursday.
The cyclone storm damaged over 3130 kms of 11 KV lines and 6462 kms of low transmission (LT) lines, and so far, Southco has restored 612 kms of 11 KV line and 1011 km of LT lines. Of 93 extra high tension (EHT) towers twisted by the storm, only 9 have been repaired. The sources claim that the power supply will be restored in the district once the 220/132 KV grid substation at Narendrapur is stabilised.
