A twenty tonne transformer has been installed by ERDF in the centre of Bordeaux  to cope with the expected increase in electricity consumption in the city centre in the coming years.

A new 225 kV power transformer was escorted by an exceptional twenty-metre convoy to the centre of Bordeaux.

“Bordeaux is the second largest city (after Toulouse) in France with the largest increase in electricity consumption in France in the past three years,” said Jean -Guy Majourel, Regional Director of ERDF. Located in the new electrical transformer station, at 27 rue de Grassi, the transformer will be used to supply low voltage power to the centre of Bordeaux with about 60,000 inhabitants. The transformer will strengthen power grids, and prevent any “voltage drops.”

Bordeaux has had a “natural” increase in power consumption linked to facilities “comfort” like air conditioning and digital equipment so it is being reinforced for two reasons. The first is population growth and the second is linked to urban development projects in the city.
