UAE, Umm Al Quwain: The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) has moved four transformers from King Faisal Road to remote areas.

Fewa Director General, Mohammed Saleh, said this was due to performance enhancement of the E-03 electricity network to meet the power needs of the northern emirate, reports Khaleej Times. He added that such moves reduced power outages in 2013.

According to Saleh, the four transformers have been replaced with three bigger ones. “Each transformer is surrounded with walls from all sides for people’s safety, and to prevent them from touching the devices. These, however, cannot be easily moved unless there is a real need to boost the performance of the network.” he said.

Abu Saeed, an Emirati visitor, said that some of the walls are damaged and pose risk to people’s lives. Other comments included:“Leaving electric transformers uncovered or not surrounded with walls prompts some people to dump rubbish on the site and some waste is blown in naturally by the winds.  All these may lead to short-circuits in the transformers.”
