Switzerland, Zurich: ABB has opened a new factory in Lodz, Poland, which manufactures a range of transformer components.

The factory is apparently the first in Europe to start commercial production of dry transformers with a triangle core (TriDry), which offer a reduction in no-load losses by 20%. They also weigh less and and produce less noise than standard dry-type transformers.

ABB Transformers business head Markus Heimbach said about the factory: “It helps us to optimise our operations and presence in the market, leverage skill synergies and serve our customers better.”

The factory will supply two neighbouring ABB plants that manufacture power transformers for voltages up to 500 kV, oil-type distribution transformers and amorphous core transformers.

The modular design of the factory reduces power consumption, which together with the installation of dry transformers and a heat exchanger, is expected to yield up to 25% savings in electricity and heating costs.
