Switzerland, Zurich: ABB introduced a new Micropole transformer for small, isolated load applications to the US market. The Micropole distribution transformer is a single phase, pole mounted distribution transformer for 3 kVA or less.

Replacement with a Micropole reduces system losses in light-load applications up to three times less no-load losses compared to a 10 kVA unit, reports ElectricNet. It has small, lightweight design and uses less pole space. The Micropole transformer is fully tested in line with IEEE oil-filled distribution transformer standards.

“In a world that’s driven today by economical and energy efficiency considerations, it will come as a surprise to many US investor owned utilities (IOU’s) and rural electric co-ops (REC’s) that there is now a highly-efficient and reliable pole-mounted distribution transformer on the market for small load applications.” said Martin Doré, marketing manager.

The Micropole transformer can be used as an integral part of a standard recloser and switched capacitor bank installation for control voltage. It can replace oversized, under-utilised transformers and help towards saving costs and losses.
