ABB’s new station covers a quarter of Deutsche Bahn’s electricity needs
Switzerland, Zurich: ABB built the most powerful converter station in the world in Germany which covers 25 % of the Deutsche Bahn’s electricity needs. The group had received this order worth € 80 million (approx. $ 110 million).

Switzerland, Zurich: ABB built the most powerful converter station in the world in Germany which covers 25 % of the Deutsche Bahn’s electricity needs. The group had received this order worth € 80 million (approx. $ 110 million) in 2007.
The station in Datteln was developed in Switzerland in Baden – Lenzburg – Turgi. It now feeds the Deutsche Bahn traction current from the high voltage network. ABB explained it allows a very efficient energy conversion.
The installation included several major components such as power transformers and rectifier units, housed in the containers arranged on the site. In particular, they can convert the usual frequency of national electricity grid into a lower frequency usually used by German or Swiss railways.
