USA, Pennsylvania: West Penn Power (FirstEnergy Corp.) has completed a significant power upgrades near Ryerson Station to help enhance customer service reliability in Greene County.

The upgrades included installation of a new 66-tonne power transformer that converts power from 138 kV to 25 kV and it is joined to an existing transformer of a similar size in the substation.  The two transformers combined will help to provide more reliability in the event of  maintenance, repair, or from severe weather, reports PR Newswire.

“The work was done to enhance our infrastructure and service reliability, with the new transformer providing greater redundancy than was previously available.” said David W. McDonald, president of West Penn Power.

“We now have two transformers available to serve customers, with either one capable of handling the substation’s electric load, which is critical to local coal mines that operate around the clock.”

West Penn Power serves about 720,000 customers in 24 Pennsylvania counties.
