USA, Ontario: Siemens Canada was selected as part of a consortium with Mortenson Construction, to design, supply and install the HVDC equipment and buildings for the Bipole III HVDC Project’s two converter stations for Manitoba Hydro.

Siemens will be supplying both converter stations for the Bipole III HVDC project with a transmission capacity of 2,300 MW which is expected to be commissioned in 2018, reports Digital Journal.

Siemens will supply the entire HVDC core technology, based on the thyristor-technology and Mortensen Construction will be responsible for the construction of the converter stations. The order is worth more than CAD 800 million ($710 million) for the consortium.

The scope of the contract  includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply and commissioning of all HVDC core components, such as converter transformers, converter valves with direct light-triggered power thyristors, smoothing reactors, protection and I&C equipment, and AC and DC filters.

The new HVDC link will boost the power supply grid in the province and help to meet the rising demand for energy.
