First of giant transformers leaves Alstom’s Stafford factory

United Kingdom, Stafford: The first of 32 transformers currently being built at Alstom, Stafford has left the factory to be transported to India.

United Kingdom, Stafford: The first of 32 transformers currently being built at Alstom, Stafford has left the factory to be transported to India.

The giant 800 kV transformer weights 290 tonnes, is 5.1 metres high and 5,0 metres wide and is one of the biggest machines ever produced in Stafford. Alstom is one of the three companies in the world to have designed, manufactured and tested transformers at this voltage level.

The production of 32 transformers are part of a £315 million ($504 million) contract to connect the power  stations of Champa in central India to Khurukshetra in Northern India along a 1,365 km transmission line.
