USA, Tennessee: Cleveland Utilities’ Electric Division performed an inspection of its high-voltage transformers which revealed insulation, outer case and control box deterioration, forcing the utility to replace more than 80 units.

Bart Borden, vice president of CU’s Electric Division, said during a recent session of the Cleveland Board of Public Utilities: “The insulation breakdown is primarily caused by ultraviolet light, rain … and extreme temperature changes that they are exposed to.”

Photographs of various transformers inspected by CU crews revealed “… cracking in the outer cases, and quite a bit of rust on control boxes and the connecting conduits.”

During the most recent board session, members approved a purchase order with Stuart C. Irby Company for 42 current and 42 voltage transformers, reports Cleveland Daily Banner. An update on the equipment purchase is expected.
