New Zealand, North Island: Transpower’s new NZD 6 million ($4.6 million) mobile power substation passed through Wellington’s port yesterday.

The mobile substation has been working in the South Island but is now heading through the central North Island to its next job at National Park.

The substation was designed and put together in New Zealand, using some local parts, and some from Indonesia, Germany and France, reports Stuff.

Power goes through the transformer on the back of one truck through to a large switchboard on the other truck and can handle enough power for about 5000 houses. The trucks open up and can be plugged into the national grid and local power lines, so small substations can be worked on for maintenance.

The trucks will spend up to six weeks at National Park, where the 50-year-old transformers are running out of capacity, before moving on to Ohakune.
