Power company plugs data centre directly into high-voltage grid
USA, Arizona: Salt River Project (SRP) is building a data centre which will plug directly into its high-voltage transmission grid.

To achieve this, SRP is building a “docking station” with several transformers that will step the current down to a usable level, reports PCWorld.
This is a pioneer project expected to meet the increasing power requirements of data centre customers without needing to build new transmission lines.
Data centres typically connect to the grid far downstream from where power is produced. Building a data centre at one of the power company stations directly on top of a high-voltage transmission line means the data centre should be able to operate without the need for a costly generator for backup power.
