Japan, Tokyo: IHI and Toshiba corporations will conduct demonstration research of a unique turbine system driven by the ocean current, developed under the auspices of Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The underwater floating type ocean current turbine system is a power generation device with two counter-rotating turbines. It is anchored to the sea floor and floats like a kite carried and driven by the ocean current, reports Business Wire.

For this purpose Toshiba will supply electrical equipment including a generator and a power transformer, while IHI will manufacture the turbine and floating body.

The project is expected to continue until 2017.
