India, Himachal Pradesh: A freshly overhauled power transformer of the underground 120 MW Sanjay Jalvidyut Pariyojna (SJP) power project at Bhawa Nagar in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, has been destroyed in a fire, forcing the shutdown of the power station for indefinite period.

The fire broke out following a blast in the bushing of the 10 MVA transformer, which contained 20,000 litres of oil, leaving the unit engulfed in smoke, reports The Tribune India.

Four operators risked their lives to shut down the power house, salvaging the switchyard as well as four other power transformers located on the upper floor of the station.

“The shutdown saved the project as it stopped the fire from spreading but it is yet to be fully controlled as highly inflammable transformer oil is leaking from the transformer at intervals and fire is recurring,” said the Managing Director of Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.
