Switzerland, Zurich: ABB has signed a contract worth around $50 million with Bombardier Transportation South Africa for the supply of traction transformers and associated products for 240 freight locomotives that will form South Africa’s electric rail fleet.

The traction transformers, which will be installed in Bombardier’s TRAXX locomotives to be built in South Africa, will transform electricity for trains running on the country’s dual 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC overhead voltage network.

Engineered for harsh and demanding environments, ABB traction transformers are designed to support heavy freight loads over distances of more than 1,000 kilometres, helping power trains that operate in challenging conditions including multiple power systems, steep inclines, tight curves, excessive wear, voltage drops in long sections and extreme temperatures.

South Africa is investing nearly $5 billion to renew and expand its rail fleet in order to boost passenger travel and increase its ability to efficiently ship freight.
