Canada, British Columbia: The Cheakamus substation in Squamish, British Columbia, has received a $7 million upgrade which boosted its capacity by nearly eight times.

The upgrade was performed by BC Hydro, which has installed a new power transformer to increase the overall capacity of the substation and deal with the growing demand for electricity in Squamish and the surrounding area.

“This substation upgrade will ensure we can continue to provide reliable power to the community,” said Greg Reimer, the executive vice-president of transmission and distribution for BC Hydro.

Work on the substation began in May, and Hydro customers were switched from a temporary diesel generator to the new transformer in mid-January.
