India, Kolkata: International Copper Association India (ICA India) is hoping for a revival of the copper industry thanks to the transformer market which is the largest market for copper in India.

The government 12-year plan to add 88,000 MW of generation capacity by 2017 will drive the power transformer industry not only through the growing demand for fresh power addition but also for replacement of old distribution transformers.

“Nearly 40-50% of the distribution transformers are in need to be replaced if we wish to cut down on T&D losses estimated to be around 3-8%,” said Sanjeev Ranjan, managing director of ICA India.

It is estimated that for each 1 MW additional power generation capacity about 7 MVA transformer capacity is required.
