USA, Ohio: FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has shut down its Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Lake County, Ohio, for a scheduled refuelling, maintenance and a transformer replacement.

During the outage, the plant will install a new, large transformer, which is one of two circuits that provide power from the off-site transmission network to the plant’s on-site electrical systems, reports Crain’s Cleveland.

The new transformer is about 6 metres tall and weighs 115 tons.

Installation of the new equipment “is expected to enhance reliability and ensure a critical power source is available for plant operation,” according to the press release.
