Smaller HVAC transformers to cut offshore project costs

Denmark: Siemens believes that using smaller high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) transformers for offshore wind projects could reduce project costs by up to 30%.

 


Denmark: Siemens believes that using smaller high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) transformers for offshore wind projects could reduce project costs by up to 30%.

Siemens is launching new equipment that is installed on the turbine, doing away with the need for the entire AC substation, reports Wind Power Monthly.

“The new technology is connected to a wind turbine on a balcony or a more extended solution, a more rigid solution for different wind turbines. We call it offshore transformer module,” said Siemens head of grid access Patrick Weber.

Taking the example of the 402 MW Dudgeon project in UK waters, Weber explained that the current single transformer platform could be replaced with two 200 MW transformers attached to two turbines at the project.

However, HVDC solutions would still be on offer for customers seeking this technology.
