Denmark, Copenhagen: Having announced a new, smaller and cost-saving HVAC solution for offshore wind projects, Siemens has launched a new alternating-current (AC) grid access solution for connecting near-shore wind power plants to the grid.

The new solution, which replaces the conventional AC transformer platforms, consists of an offshore transformer module (OTM) attached directly to a wind turbine, and acts as a distributed transmission asset, reports Windpower Engineering.

The new solution will also reduce costs of the construction, transport, installation, operation and maintenance of the platform by up to 40 percent, as it is one third smaller in size and weight compared to a conventional AC platform.

The innovation is small and light enough to be mounted together with a turbine on the same foundation and reduces installation time by around 20 percent.
