USA, New York: General Electric unit GE Energy Financial Services has announced that it will auction 315 MW of bi-directional electricity transfer capacity across its Linden Variable Frequency Transformer (VFT) smart grid project.

The Linden VFT smart grid project connects New Jersey and New York City power grids, which dispatch energy using three variable frequency transformers that are converting up to 315 MW of electricity, enough for up to 315,000 homes, reports Penn Energy.

GE Energy Financial Services will sell 90 MW of transmission scheduling rights that will become available on 1 June 2016, and 225 MW of transmission scheduling rights that will become available on 1 June 1 2018.

The variable frequency transformers provide a precise control path between electrical grids, permitting power exchanges with high reliability, speed and efficiency, while offering flexibility in how growing energy demand is met.
