USA, New York: A transformer failure at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in suburban New York which caused a fire and forced an automatic shutdown of a reactor on Saturday, also caused an oil leakage into the Hudson River.

When the power transformer exploded, it released oil into a holding tank, which then overflowed and sent oil onto the ground and into the river waters through a discharge drain, reports The Guardian.

New York City Governor Cuomo said crews were working to contain and clean up the oil spill but it was not clear yet how much oil had been released.

It was not immediately clear what caused the transformer failure, or whether the transformer would be repaired or replaced.

The Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, 56 kilometres up the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan, supplies electricity for millions of homes, businesses and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
