Faulty transformer keeps Oyster Creek NPP offline for fifth straight day
USA, New Jersey: The Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in southern Ocean County, New Jersey remains shut down for the fifth day as staff work to solve the electric problem that sent it offline.

The issue originated from a main power transformer outside the reactor building used before electricity reaches the grid, said the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, reports Press of Atlantic City.
“We want to make sure why it happened, but for public safety and the plant workers the plant is safely shut down. Now it’s a matter of troubleshooting exactly what occurred,” U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Neil Sheehan said last week.
The Oyster Creek Generating Station is the U.S. oldest nuclear power plant and produces enough electricity to power about 600,000 homes. Exelon announced in 2010 it would close the plant in 2019, which would be its 50th year in operation.
