USA, New York: The failed transformer which sparked a fire and oil leak at Indian Point nuclear power plant in the New York City suburbs must be replaced, according to officials.

The transformer at Indian Point Unit 3 failed on Saturday evening, causing a fire that forced the automatic shutdown of a reactor, which now may be offline for weeks, reports Fire House.

The plant owner Entergy Corp. is still investigating what caused the failure but the machinery must be replaced. Transformers typically last 30 years, but this one was installed in 2007, the spokesman for the company said.

Over 10,000 of litres of transformer oil spilled into the Hudson River after the fire as the oil seeped into a holding tank which did not have the capacity to contain it.
