USA, Washington D.C.: Members of the U.S. Congress Renee Ellmers and Jerry McNerney have introduced legislation to create backup power transformers, which is to be included in the House Energy Package, reports the Ripon Advance.

Ellmers explained the Strategic Transformer Reserve Program will regulate storing a sufficient number of spare large power transformers in strategically located facilities that could temporarily replace critically damaged large power transformers.

“This will better prepare us so that we have the ability to repair the grid and restore power whether there is a natural disaster or a targeted attack,” Congresswoman Ellmers said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted in favour of finishing the process of creating a new reliability standard that will govern electric transmission systems and protect them from “geomagnetic disturbances,” including electromagnetic pulse, according to Washington Examiner.

Once fully adopted, the agency plans to give special attention to high-voltage transformers which have been the target of terror attacks, with a goal to block a so-called “black swan” event when the grid goes dark from a rare, high-profile and unpredictable event.
