UK, Cambridge: A German electrical power technology giant Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR) has acquired all the assets and intellectual property of the Cambridge-based power electronics business Amantys, which went bankrupt in March this year and closed its operations.

Amantys Ltd., a power electronics startup dealing with applications of digital control to medium-to-high voltage electrical systems ceased trading despite having raised around $20 million of investment in under five years. With this acquisition, MR salvaged the core technology and global market potential of this business, reports Business Weekly.

“Our priority is to reestablish the operating business of Amantys to continue to supply premium gate driver products to customers. The team will also progress the technology development in the field of IGBT drivers,” a spokesperson said.

MR has installed a transition manager in Cambridge, who is working together with former members of the Amantys team. MR plans to set up a new legal entity in the UK as a wholly foreign-owned company.

The German company says the acquisition of the product line and IP of “one the most innovative players within the power electronics market” forms a perfect fit into the long-term technology strategy of the Reinhausen Group.

Considering that MR’s core business is the regulation of power transformers, does this indicate that we are embarking on an era of electronic tap changers?
