India, New Delhi: The Indian Transformer Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA) has approached the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to stop import of sub-standard cold-rolled grain-oriented (CRGO) steel for transformers.

According to industry sources, sub-standard CRGO sheets are the root cause for faulty transformers, and faulty and sub-standard transformers are the main cause for the high transmission and distribution losses of electricity in India, reports KNN India.

On 5 June 2015, the Indian Power Minister Piyush Goyal directed the concerned authorities and agencies to use only prime CRGO material for the manufacture of transformers, which will conserve the energy and reduce carbon emission.

Also, at the insistence of the industry, Ministry of Steel has banned import of non-prime CRGO, i.e. seconds, mill rejects, defective, leftover and used CRGO under code HS 8504 (as transformer part) and CRGO scrap under code HS 7204. However, this has not stopped the import of CRGO scrap, which is being cleared by the customs at various ports.

ITMA has thus requested DGFT to issue necessary directions to stop the import of sub-standard CRGO material by declaring it a restricted item of import.
