USA, Massachusetts: The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has fined the power utility Eversource $10,000 for failing to notify the state properly after transformer oil spill that occurred in Springfield on 4 October 2014.

The incident occurred after a vehicle hit an electric pole with a transformer causing a spill of 95 litres of oil that contaminated the vehicle, the soil and the pavement, reports Mass Live.

Utility employees and contractors started the clean-up immediately, towing the vehicle before notifying MassDEP and determining whether the oil that was spilt on the car was contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). PCBs were once used as coolants and lubricants in transformers, but have also been linked to environmental and health problems.

At the time of the incident, the utility was doing business under its old name Western Massachusetts Electric Co.
