Saudi Arabia to boost its power generation capacity by 50%

Saudi Arabia is boosting its power generation capacity from less than 60 GW to about 91 GW by 2020, and to more than double existing capacity over the longer term, looking to meet the rising demand resulting from economic growth in the country and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, primarily driven by oil and gas.

To provide strong power infrastructure and secure a reliable electricity supply to growing industrial and commercial sectors in the region, Saudi Arabia’s national power transmission and distribution operator (SEC) is increasing the capacity of five substations, and has placed substation expansion orders worth $150 million with ABB.

As part of the transmission capacity upgrade projects, SEC has also ordered 65 power transformers worth $60 million.
