Australia, New South Wales:  State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) is in the race to buy 100 percent of the Australian high voltage electricity network TransGrid, which is another step in the global expansion of the world’s largest public electric utility enterprise and its aim to create a “global energy internet”.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, SGCG chairman, Liu Zhenya, has already spoken at United Nations forums about building the international smart grid. Clean energy would be distributed globally using the ultra-high voltage transmission lines State Grid is creating, with smart grids playing a key role as they connect billions of household smart meters to the internet.

The idea of the global internet of energy is also supported by Huawei, which provides technology for State Grid Corporation’s smart grid, reports SMH.

The global expansion of SGCC started in 2010, when the company acquired complete control of Brazil’s electricity grid. Since then SGCC has acquired 40 percent of the Philippine national grid, and paid a 40 percent market premium to buy a quarter of Portugal’s grid. Last year, State Grid won a third of the Italian grid and it is shortlisted for Greece’s.

While creation of a global energy internet is seen by some as a ray of hope for renewable energy, others speculate that this might pose a serious cyber security threat.
