Uganda, Kampala: Umeme Ltd., the largest electric utility in Uganda, has entered into an agreement with ABB Uganda Limited and Babcon Uganda Ltd to build a new 40 MVA substation at Kira Town Council, Namugongo.

Emmanuel Lagu, acting managing director ABB Ltd said that power transformers, switchgears and cables for the project will be imported, reports New Vision.

The project worth $4.5 million is part of a more comprehensive Umeme’s programme of constructing new power substations to reduce load shedding and power losses occurring due to transportation of power over long transmission lines.

“Our target is to build two to three substation per year. The power demand in Uganda is growing and we have to put in the infrastructure to distribute the power,” Umeme managing director said.
