The Philippines, Luzon: The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has upgraded the San Esteban substation in Ilocos Sur by upgrading its power transformer capacity from 50 MVA to 100 MVA in order to boost the reliability of power generation and load demand in the Illocos region.

NGCP said this will help support the capability and reliability of the power transformer to accommodate the growing generation capacity from wind farms in Ilocos Norte, which now include the 150 MW Burgos wind project, 81 MW project in Pagudpud and 52 MW project in Bangui, reports Malaya.

According to NGCP, the San Esteban substation is a critical link as it transmits around 280 MW to the Luzon grid and also caters to the load demand from connected electric cooperatives including the Abra Electric Cooperative, Ilocos Sur Electric Cooperative and Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative.
