USA, Minnesota: Xcel Energy, a Minneapolis-based utility company, has embarked on a project to replace a turbine and step-up transformer at Prairie Island nuclear plant as part of the utility’s $68 million upgrades to extend the life of the 1970s-era power plant.

The utility has shut down one of its two nuclear reactors in Red Wing, Minnesota, for refuelling and to replace an original generator and transformer in a month long $68 million project that will employ about 1,000 specialized contractors, reports Star Tribune.

The step-up transformer will be replaced at a cost of $13 million. It converts the generator’s output from 22 kV to 345 kV for the power grid.
