USA, Pennsylvania: The Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania received a massive backup transformer that will only be used as a spare in the event of a malfunction.

FirstEnergy Corp. spokeswoman Jennifer Young said the nuclear plant has two main transformers that convert electricity produced there into voltage that is then delivered to customers, reports Times Online.

“Because the manufacture and delivery of this equipment could take years, it is vital to have a new transformer available as a spare,” Young said. “Once on site, the transformer can be installed quickly if problems develop with the others, resulting in better reliability for the plant.”

Getting the transformer to Beaver Valley was no small task. The structure is 14 metres long, 9 metres wide and 10 metres tall and, when filled with oil, weighs 453 tonnes.

It was built in Austria and shipped to Texas before snaking its way up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers on its way to Beaver Valley.
