Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) has signed a €29 million ($31 million) loan agreement with Finnish energy company Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkö Oy to upgrade one of the largest distribution networks in Finland and improve the security of supply to the company’s customers.

As part of the investment programme, Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkö will refurbish three power stations and approximately 1,000 old pole-mounted transformers. These will either be replaced with new pad-mounted transformers or equipped with oil spill protection, NIB states in the press release.

The investment programme also covers replacement of 1,150 kilometres of overhead lines with underground cables in order to protect against severe weather conditions in eastern Finland.
