Six Johannesburg substations to be upgraded at over $35M


 


South Africa, Johannesburg: City Power, the City of Johannesburg’s power utility, is planning to spend more than $35 million over the next three years on the upgrade of six power substations in Region C to increase their capacity and prevent power outages.

According to City Power Managing Director Sicelo Xulu, among the changes to be implemented are replacement of the existing 88/33 kV 80 MVA and 88/11 kV 20 MVA power transformers with two new 88/11 kV 45 MVA ones, reports Joburg.

Also, the project includes allocation of space for a third 88/11 kV power transformer, two 88 kV feeder bays and 11 kV feeder and standby board.

The six substations included in the project are in Roodepoort, Wilro Park, Kloofendal, New Fleurhof, Tshepisong and Princess.

On completion of the project, 1,000 MVA is expected to be added to the utility’s current capacity.
