Construction of a large substation with power transformers and associated electrical equipment has begun on Emerald Isle, which is one of 27 that Alliant is building in Cedar Rapids to upgrade its system, reports The Gazette.

The substation will serve about 8,000 households and is expected to be energised in the first or second quarter of 2016.
