Brazil: Brazilian transformer manufacturer WEG has been upgrading nine 550 kV single-phase transformer following the contract signed with the electric utility company Copel.

The transformers installed at Copel’s hydroelectric plant Power Governor Bento Munhoz da Rocha Netto, in the city of Pinhao, are responsible for transforming the generated voltage from 16 kV to 550 kV.

Under the contract, WEG has been redesigning the transformers with technical updates and improvements extending their lifetime for another 20-30 years. Of the nine transformers, six are already in operation and three are still under renovation and will be delivered soon.

The old transformers were manufactured in the early 1980s and had reached end of their operating time due to aging.
