France, Paris: A new power line across the eastern Pyrenees running from France to Spain operates below capacity because works on the Spanish side have not been completed in time.

According to the French energy regulator CRE, the phase-shifting transformer-in Arkale, Spain will not go into service until 2017 and the reinforcement of the Spanish grid on the eastern side of the Pyrenees was not completed in time, reports Reuters.

The 65 km direct current line, which cost 700 million euros to build, was supposed to double French-Spanish power exchange capacity to 2,800 MW, but the CRE said in a statement that it expects only 2,000 MW will be available in 2016.

“This situation reduces the expected advantages of the new interconnection line for market participants and for consumers, who will bear the cost,” the CRE said.
