Providence to power up with new substation

USA, Rhode Island: The National Grid expects to start construction on a new substation near the South Street Landing project, in Providence, Rhode Island, next month.
The new substation with power transformers and associated electrical equipment will replace a facility attached to the South Street Power Station that was originally built in 1919 and provides electrical service to 150 MW of load in Providence, reports Providence Journal.
The new facility will be moved to a prominent downtown location and designed to include a new switchgear and control building made of pre-cast concrete panels and an outdoor switchyard for the facility’s transformers.
New 115 kV cables will be buried underground and existing overhead lines will be removed as will the existing substation.
The new substation should be commissioned in 2018.
