The generator transformer began its journey 10 weeks ago in China and landed at the Port of Newcastle in December, reports Mudgee Guardian.
The load took a meticulously planned 500-kilometre journey to Lithgow via the Golden Highway and Castlereagh Highway, passing through Gulgong and Mudgee.
EnergyAustralia’s Head of NSW Assets Luke Welfare said the transformer would serve as a backup in case one of the power station’s four other transformers failed.
Built over two stages in 1992 and 1993, the Mount Piper Power Station comprises two 700 MW coal-fired steam turbine generators which have the capacity to meet the energy needs of approximately 1.18 million homes in New South Wales every year.
