$130M contract awarded for US HVDC link upgrade

Switzerland, Zurich: ABB has received an order worth around $130 million from a U.S. electric cooperative Great River Energy to upgrade an existing ± 400 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection between Underwood, North Dakota and Buffalo, Minnesota in the U.S.

 


Switzerland, Zurich: ABB has received an order worth around $130 million from a U.S. electric cooperative Great River Energy to upgrade an existing ± 400 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection between Underwood, North Dakota and Buffalo, Minnesota in the U.S.

As part of the project scope, ABB will undertake the upgrade and life extension of the converter valves and other related equipment at the converter stations, the manufacturer states in the press release.

In addition to modernizing the HVDC system, the upgrade will also help improve grid reliability and efficiency.

The current HVDC system was originally commissioned by ABB in 1978.
