First of four transformers from Europe reaches Kentucky

USA, Kentucky: The first of four new power transformers has been delivered to the Big Sandy Power Plant owned and operated by American Electric Power near Louisa, Kentucky.

 

USA, Kentucky: The first of four new power transformers has been delivered to the Big Sandy Power Plant owned and operated by American Electric Power near Louisa, Kentucky.

The new 317-ton transformer is part of the plant’s $70-million expansion project which has seen closing of the larger unit of the Big Sandy branch last year, with the smaller generator, Big Sandy No. 1, transitioning toward natural gas conversion, reports The Independent Online.

The new transformers were manufactured in Europe and shipped to New Orleans before they were brought to Kentucky by rail. They will allow the plant to step down the transmission voltage of 765 kV to 345 kV.
