New Zealand, Christchurch: One day after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit east Christchurch on Sunday, three huge explosions shook Christchurch power substation on Monday.
The explosions were caused by a blown transformer after oil in one of the substation’s capacitors caught fire, Transpower spokeswoman Rebecca Wilson Fire said, reports TVNZ.
It took three hours to extinguish the fire, but as the transformer was protected by blast walls, the blaze was contained.
Transpower spokeswoman said it was too early to determine whether the blaze was related to the earthquake or any subsequent aftershocks.
