RAF engaged to put out transformer fire in Lincolnshire
United Kingdom, Lincolnshire: The Royal Air Force (RAF) was called in to help put out a transformer fire at an electricity substation that shook Grantham, Lincolnshire two days ago, which caused a major power cut leading to traffic and rail chaos and buildings being evacuated.
United Kingdom, Lincolnshire: The Royal Air Force (RAF) was called in to help put out a transformer fire at an electricity substation that shook Grantham, Lincolnshire two days ago, which caused a major power cut leading to traffic and rail chaos and buildings being evacuated.
The RAF was called in to pump foam onto the Grantham electricity substation to reduce the risk of 36,000 litres of oil from the blazing transformer catching fire, reports Lincolnshire Echo.
Due to the presence of so much oil, the fire could have had much worse consequences because fire fighters could not approach the exploded transformer.
According to a fire fighter at the scene, “We use foam to put out these fires but we couldn’t get close to [the transformer] because there was another transformer that was three foot away. […] This is the largest transformer fire that I have ever been to.”
The RAF sent three foam tenders to help extinguish the blaze.
Western Power Distribution spokesperson said the company was still investigating the causes of the incident and what equipment will need to be replaced.
