Poland: The first phase-shifting transformer between Poland and Germany has been put in operation at Mikulowa station in Poland.
The phase shifter between the Mikulowa station in Poland and Hagenwerder in Germany is specifically designed to fight loop-flows created by unpredictable renewable power generation, and marks the end of the first phase of the project coordinated between the Polish and German Transmission System Operators, PSE and 50Hertz, respectively.
The second phase of the project includes the construction of the phase shifting transformer at the German station Vierraden, along with the upgrade of the additional northern line between Krajnik in Poland and Vierraden in Germany from the current 220 kV to 380 kV.
The Krajnik-Vierraden line is expected to be operational in 2018.
Once 50Hertz finishes technical work on its side of the border, additional 1.5 GW of capacity from Poland into Germany will be available.
