Siemens will supply National Grid UK with a replacement HVDC transformer for the CrossChannel link between the United Kingdom and France.

The replacement HVDC converter transformer is required to provide redundancy and to replace a transformer at the Sellindge converter station in case of an emergency, the manufacturer said in a statement.

The new 400 kV, 315 MVA transformer will feed the lower DC voltage bridge of the 12-pulse converter.

At the same time, one of the existing transformers will also be repaired.

The 2,000-MW HVDC link is bidirectional so both the UK and France can export and import energy depending upon market demands.
