India, Andhra Pradesh: A major transformer fire broke out at the Tadikonda substation in the Guntur district late on Wednesday evening leaving most parts of the district in darkness.

Residents spent a sleepless night after Transco officials switched off supply. Fire fighters brought it under control after about 6 hours — at 2.30 a.m.

The fire that took 6 hours to bring under control broke out after a 100 MVA transformer exploded at the 220/132 kV substation on Wednesday evening, reports The Hindu.

“The transformer was installed 17 years ago. It could have exploded due to faulty design and problems in operation and maintenance,’’ said Deputy Executive Engineer, Operation and Maintenance, APTransco Guntur, A.V Bhaskara Rao.

The substation at Tadikonda is a major power transmission centre serving the needs of parts of Guntur, Tenali and Repalle towns.
