Germany, Dresden: Dr. Ralf Pietsch from HIGHVOLT has recently attended a meeting of the 16 CIGRE study committees for the first time since his appointment to committee chairman.

The principal aim of CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électriques) is to promote knowledge and information exchanges relating to the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy in and between the 97 countries which are currently members. Equally important roles are played by both proven technologies and new technology developments.

“Our objective is above all to prepare the power industry to cope with changing framework conditions, to establish globally comparable safety standards and thus, at the end of the day, to contribute to reliable electricity supplies for the whole population of the world,” says Dr. Pietsch to summarise the guiding intentions of the CIGRE members.

In August, Dr. Pietsch was appointed chairman of the study committee SC D1 “Materials and Emerging Test Techniques”, to which 26 working groups belong. Key topics for the study committee are new materials and diagnostic techniques in the field of electrical engineering, and new test methods which are expected to gain importance in the medium to longer term.
