China, Macau: Power utility CEM is upgrading 100 substations in the Macau’s low-lying areas this year as part of the company’s anti-flood measures.

With some 80 substations already completed, the project is aimed to help the utility strengthen its power supply facilities in cases of floods caused by extreme weather conditions such as typhoons, reports Macau News.

According to CEM Transmission and Distribution Department Senior Manager Billy Chan Hon Keong, CEM’s substations are usually affected or badly damaged by the floods in various areas, causing massive power outages in the city.

The company has about 1,600 substations in the city, and is also planning to move some substations to higher-lying locations in the Inner Harbour area.
